INTRODUCTION
DemocracyCraft is home to an extensive legal system, in the Courts of the Commonwealth of Redmont. It consists of many roles, positions, and cases. In the Courts, you're able to file a lawsuit against another citizen, a company, a government department, or the Government as a whole. It is still important to differentiate a rule from a law before taking someone to trial. The judicial arm of Government, consisting of the District Court, Federal Court, and Supreme Court, interpret the law as written by the legislature and administered by the Executive.
LEVELS OF THE COURT
Just like many real-life judicial systems, there are different levels of courts, with varying jurisdiction. The courts exercise a top-down system, where if the presiding Judge of one level is unable to preside, the one above can preside on such. The three-tiered system we follow is noted below:
- District Court of the Commonwealth of Redmont
- Presided over by Magistrates.
- Issues judgement on minor civil and criminal cases.
- Information on how to file a lawsuit in the District Court can be found here.
- Federal Court of the Commonwealth of Redmont
- Presided over by Judges.
- Issues judgement on major civil and criminal cases.
- Issues judgement on cases where the constitutionality of a law has been raised.
- Reviews warrants from the Department of Justice.
- Hears appeals from the District Court.
- Information on how to file a lawsuit in the Federal Court can be found here.
- Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Redmont
- Presided over by Justices and the Chief Justice.
- Issues judgement over the removal of high ranking government officials.
- Hears appeals from the Federal Court.
- Information on how to file a lawsuit in the Supreme Court can be found here.
JUDICIAL OFFICERS
The Court consists of multiple roles, including:
- The Chief Justice, whom is nominated by the President and approved by the Senate.
- Justices, whom are nominated by the President and approved by the Senate.
- Judges, whom are nominated by the President and approved by the Senate.
