BILL
To

Amend the Constitution and Electoral Act

The people of the Commonwealth of Redmont, through their elected Representatives in the Congress and the force of law ordained to that Congress by the people through the Constitution, do hereby enact the following provisions into law:

1 - Short Title and Enactment
(1) This Act may be cited as the 'Senator Term Quick Fix Act'.
(2) This Act shall be enacted immediately upon its signage.
(3) This Act has been authored by Representative TheReal42Person.
(4) This Act has been co-sponsored by Sen. v__d.

2 - Reasons
(1) Due to a tiny error in the Constitution/Electoral Act, our Senators who won the most votes have been scammed out of a four-month term.
(2) Unfortunately, it is too late to allow them a longer term, but we can prevent this from happening in the future.

3 - The Electoral Act shall be amended as follows:
7 - Senate Elections
(1) Voting System. Elections for the Senate shall be conducted through a system of single non-transferable vote as outlined in this Act.
(2) Classes. The Senate shall be divided into two classes, Class A and Class B.
(a) Where the entire Senate is up for election, the highest polling 50% of Senators shall be assigned to the class with the longer term while the remaining Senators shall be assigned to the class with the shorter term.
(3) Activity Requirements. In order to run for and maintain their seat in the Senate, citizens need to meet these requirements:
  • Has 6 hours active monthly playtime
  • Has accrued 72 hours playtime prior to declaring their intent to contest the election on the forums
  • Is an active participant in the community, in-game, on discord, and on the forums.
(4) Senate Duration. 4 Month Term
(5) Senate Election Months:
(6) Class A. January, May, September
(7) Class B. March, July, November”

4 - Application
(1) This hereby applies to the six most recently elected Senators as well as any future election where the entire senate is up for election.

Nay - Although I agree that this act proposes a viable solution to address our current system's flaws, I hold reservations about applying it to the current senators' terms. While it's true that those in the bottom 50% may now receive longer terms, it's important to acknowledge that this was established by law. They should adhere to the terms outlined, regardless of their ranking. Upholding the law's clarity is crucial, even if it means that those in the bottom percentile benefit from its provisions. Changing it is fine just for the future not for now.

Nay - Changing laws to target individuals is generally a bad idea. In this case, this Act is specifically designed to target Vernicia, crytiee, and myself. Furthermore, the Constitution has already established who is Class A/Class B. To go back and pretend the Constitution said something else a month ago is irresponsible and ignorant.

On principle, you can't just go back and change the classes of Senators. What's next? A party takes power and puts in the Constitution "Only this party can serve 4 months"? It's dangerous to allow.
