Amend the Constitution and Expand District Court Jurisdiction
The people of the Commonwealth of Redmont, through their elected Representatives in the Congress and the force of law ordained to that Congress by the people through the constitution, do hereby enact the following provisions into law:
1 - Short Title and Enactment
(1) This Act may be cited as the 'District Court Jurisdiction Expansion Act'.
(2) This Act shall be enacted immediately upon its signage.
(3) This Act has been authored by Deputy President of the Senate lcn.
(4) This Act has been proposed by Representative Eenza.
(5) This Act has been co-sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House Pepecuu.
2 - Reasons
(1) The District Court is underutilized, and the Federal Court is overworked.
(a) There are currently four active cases in the District Court, while there are nineteen in the Federal Court.
(2) Raising the monetary requirement for cases to go to the Federal Court will ease this issue and help to rebalance the number of cases each Court has to handle.
(a) As it stands currently, changing the requirement to this would (if current cases were filed according to this change) result in there being 7 cases in the District Court, and 16 in the Federal Court.
3 - Amendment
(1) Section 16. Powers of the District Court of the Constitution shall be amended as follows:
“16. Powers of the District Court
(1) Original Jurisdiction. The District Court of Redmont has original jurisdiction over:
(a) arrests,
(b) wrongful seizure,
(c) public official misconduct,
(d) minor criminal prosecutions that result in jail not exceeding more than 60 minutes or $10,000 dollars in fines,
(e) minor civil cases whose value does not exceed more than $120,000$50,000 dollars“
(2) Section 18. Powers of the Federal Court of the Constitution shall be amended as follows:
“18. Powers of the Federal Court
(1) Original Jurisdiction. The Federal Court of Redmont has original jurisdiction over:
(a) Questions of constitutionality,
(b) Major criminal prosecutions that result in jail exceeding 60 minutes or $10,000 dollars of fines,
(c) Major civil cases whose value exceeds $120,000$50,000 dollars,
(d) Any cases of significance that do not fit within the established bounds of court jurisdictions.
(e) Issuing warrants"
