BAR COUNCIL - JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Authored by amah853 in collaboration with the 2nd BAR Council

1. Mock Court Judge
DESCRIPTION:

The BAR offers a service called “Mock Court”, which allows inexperienced members to practice in an unofficial court of law before representing real clients. Mock Court Judges are expected to preside over these cases, while having patience and guiding beginners. You will simulate a real court case to provide these beginners to develop their legal skills in a semi-realistic environment.

RESPONSIBILTIES:
  • Preside over assigned cases
  • Enforce the official Court Rules and Procedures, while making reasonable adjustments as needed
  • Review filings, rule on motions and objections, and issue a verdict
  • Act as fictional witnesses where needed in Discovery
  • Provide both positive and constructive feedback at the conclusion of the case to both lawyers
  • Maintain professionalism and establish deadlines within cases

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Most hold at least the qualification of Barrister
  • Must have prior case experience
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of Redmont law
  • Be appointed by the Mock Trial Director

NOTE: Elected BAR Councillors are automatically appointed upon their election, and need not be appointed by the Mock Trial Director or fulfill any listed requirements.

COMPENSATION:
Typically ranges from $500 - $2,000 per case, but this is determined at the discretion of the Mock Trial Director, and may depend upon current funding/budget. This is subject to change at any time.

2. Mock Case Drafter
DESCRIPTION:

Mock Case Drafters are responsible for creating and drafting various cases for use in the BAR’s mock court program. Cases must be ambiguous and provide both sides an opportunity to win. For example, a breach of contract case has one clear winner, someone’s right and someone’s wrong. Drafters must instead design their cases so as to leave the winner of the case to whoever can perform the best practice in the case. Drafters will create the entire story from start to finish, including private discord messages, simulated payment transfer logs, etc, and determine what evidence each side should have from the start and have other evidence that can only be obtained through discovery, like information from witnesses and other characters as applicable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop realistic, balanced fictional cases based on Redmont law.
  • Create case backgrounds, evidence packets, witness statements, and other relevant materials.
  • Ensure both parties have a reasonable opportunity to present their arguments.
  • Prepare case materials in the format required by the Mock Trial Program.
  • Coordinate with the Mock Trial Director to review and finalize cases before publication.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of unreleased case materials.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Drafters must hold the Barrister specialization relevant to the case they draft.
  • Drafters must have prior case experience.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of Redmont law.
  • Be appointed by the Mock Trial Director.
  • Have strong writing skills.

COMPENSATION:
Determined on a case-by-case basis by the Mock Trial Director. Compensation may vary upon current funding/budget of the Mock Trial budget. This is subject to change at any time.

3. BAR Investigator
DESCRIPTION:

BAR Investigators are the people who help BAR by using their investigative skills to process larger investigative tasks for the BAR Council's consideration as deemed neccessary. This usually amounts to following a given goal statement by the BAR, producing a list of findings, then operating on those findings as neccessary to provide information relevant to the aforementioned goal statement. This often amounts to reading large amounts of case record, analyzing for criteria meeting the goal statement and providing a report to the BAR (a handy template is given to assist you in doing so). Often, these investigations are for purposes of identifying conduct violating BAR rules, but they don't have to be.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Be able to define your existing conflicts of interest properly for the definition of scope.
  • Analyze case record to find items relevant to goal statement and provide them as findings.
  • Create a summary statement of evidence relevant to investigation.
  • Be able to review the current BAR CoC rules and identify conduct that violates them.
  • Prepare a written report of the above (based on a template or through some other reasonable format).
  • Maintain the confidentiality of ongoing investigations, BAR decisions and evidence material.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Drafters must hold the Attorney qualification.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of Redmont law.
  • Be appointed by the BAR Councillor.
  • Have strong logical reasoning skills and a propensity to be inquisitive in investigation.

COMPENSATION:
Determined on a case-by-case basis by BAR council, but usually 2000$/investigation. This pay may be increased if the scope is unusually large.
