Doctor Guide

Welcome to the Department of Health guide for doctors. The job is complicated and can involve a lot of learning so please use this guide to help you do the job as well as you possibly can.

TREATING PATIENTS

Most of your time spent as a doctor will be treating patients. To make things fair, doctors let their colleagues know that they will be attending to a patient before actually doing so. This should be done in-game in the /doh channel. Most doctors simply say 'me' to claim a patient.

Don't treat a patient until you have let colleagues know. Attending/treating a patient without doing this, or attending/treating a patient that a colleague has claimed is known as 'stealing a patient' and goes against the Code of Conduct.

After claiming a patient, you can run /doctor-attend <patient> to teleport to the hospital/clinic where your patient asked for help. You should talk to your patient in the /l channel and take them through to a treatment room to talk about their health. Here you might need to ask the patient their symptoms and temperature in order to properly diagnose them. You might want to use the Conditions and Treatments Guide for help, or you can run /health list diseases in-game to get information too.

Next, craft the cure you need in the cure room and return to your patient to treat them. A patient might want to pay out of pocket, but they have to make that clear to you before you treat them.

To treat a patient you hold the cure in your hand and RIGHT-CLICK on your patient. Don't drop cures and allow patients to self-treat as you wont be able to make a Medicare claim for your payment.

After treating the patient you can run /bulkbill <patient> to collect the co-payment for the treatment. Make sure to read the Medicare Policy and keep up-to-date with any changes.

Once that's all done, you can say goodbye to your patient.

TEACHING OTHERS

As a doctor, it is important that you play an active role in the learning and development of your colleagues, especially trainee doctors. While you don't have as much responsibility for their training as the medical specialists do, you still need to be ready to answer questions and provide teaching moments.

If a trainee is around when you are attending a patient, you should offer them the opportunity to shadow your attend. Take the time to ask them questions and answer theirs as you move through your attend. Don't allow a shadowing trainee to steal all your thunder though, make sure you treat the patient so you can claim your payment.

If you are struggling on what to ask a shadowing trainee, maybe see if they can diagnose the patient themselves or if they know which cure to craft and its recipe, you could even quiz them on department policy!

It is also important to support your fellow doctors. The health landscape of Redmont changes over time and doctors might not be aware of any recent changes to conditions or policy, it is important that you provide help when asked and correct people when you see mistakes. Try to allow others to learn when you do so, the secretary can handle cases where more than learning is required.

UPHOLDING STANDARDS

The DoH expects its doctors to hold themselves to high standards, even outside the hospital. Our doctors should be professional, ethical, and represent the best of Redmontian society. To this end, it is a good idea to stay up to date on department policy, which can change. It is also good to be aware of what you MUST do and what you SHOULD do. A lot of DoH policy uses this terminology and it is important to get comfortable with the difference. Things a doctor MUST do are considered to be legal or ethical duties and violating them is a serious breach of what the department considered correct behaviour. Things a doctor SHOULD do are best practice guidance from the department. Not following the best practice isn't advisable, but the department understands it cannot always be followed in every circumstance.

When you or someone else in the department fails to meet the standards of the department it is important to be honest and escalate it to the necessary parties. More likely than not one of the medical specialists will be able to deal with the complaint, but it is also perfectly valid to take something to the Secretary or Deputy, particularly if the worry is about an MS. If things aren't passed up the chain, the department can't improve so never feel shy about speaking your mind!

USEFUL COMMANDS

There are several commands that doctors need to know to do their jobs properly:
  • /doh - switches to the DoH employee channel in game to talk only with your colleagues.
  • /doctor-attend <patient> - teleports you to the hospital from where your patient requested assistance.
  • /bulkbill <patient> - charges the department for a Medicare co-payment towards treatment costs.
  • /health list diseases - lists all implemented diseases.
  • /health list symptoms - lists all implemented symptoms.
  • /recipes - opens the recipe UI to find recipes for cures.
It is also a good idea to know these commands as you might need to ask a patient to run them for you:
  • /health symptoms - lists the current symptoms of the player who runs the command.
  • /health temperature - shows the current temperature of the the player who runs the command.

The Doctor Guide is updated at the discretion of the Secretary. Any further questions may be raised via support ticket in the Discord or asking around in-game.

Stay healthy!
